Bilingual Education For Central America (BECA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that started over 20 years ago. BECA’s mission is to provide low to no cost bilingual education (English and Spanish) to under-resourced areas and schools in Central America and equip the future generations to stay in the region to lead their communities towards socio-economic development and growth.
Currently, BECA partners with two schools: San Jerónimo Bilingual School and Santa Monica Bilingual School. These schools are located in Cofradía and Vida Nueva (Honduras). BECA does not own these schools, BECA's local partners and community members do. BECA provides the English speaking expertise to the schools, through hiring English speaking teachers (native and local bilinguals) as well as providing the curriculum and professional development to the teachers and staff at the school. Every year, BECA provides a quality bilingual education to 500 students from kinder to ninth grade.
BECA's partner schools are low to no cost private bilingual schools (they are not public schools). It costs around $35 a month for a family to send their child to BECA's partner schools. We also have a scholarship program for families who cannot pay the full tuition at the schools. 65% of BECA’s families receive a partial or full scholarship to attend our schools. In exchange for this scholarship, families take the lead in supporting school operations, leading parent talks, and participating in the upkeep of the schools.
When BECA first started we filled our classroom with the support of international volunteers who dedicated one year of service to BECA. BECA's long term vision was always to hire local graduates from the schools and create a sustainable pipeline of local bilingual teachers in the region. This forever dream was achieved in 2016 when San Jerónimo Bilingual School hired their very first graduate to be a teacher in their school. Today, 85% of BECA’s team are local bilingual leaders and teachers (85% of our team is also female led). BECA continues to hire local Honduran bilingual leaders and international volunteers interested in serving at our of our partner schools for an academic year.
For the 2024-2025 school year BECA is looking to hire around 20 teachers (international volunteers and local Honduran bilingual leaders) who are committed to supporting Bilingual Education for Central America.
